Two new elementary schools, Treeline and Manatee, opened to serve the east zone this year, and a high school moved into a new building after two years in a staging school.

Next year plans are to open another elementary school, G. Weaver Hipps Elementary. Treeline Elementary will move to its permanent location on Treeline Avenue.A new middle school, Oak Hammock Middle is under construction on Tice Street and will be located next to Manatee Elementary.Lee County public schools had 80,526 students enrolled by the first enrollment cycle for the 2007-08 school year, including alternative and charter schools. That is up from 78,775 in 2006.The east zone, which includes 13 elementaries, five middle schools, two kindergarten through eighth grade schools, three high schools, three charters, two life academies and an exceptional student center, has been the fastest growing area in student population.This school year the Lee County School District reported 39,804 students enrolled in elementary schools, 17,540 in middle schools and 23,182 students in high schools."We've got at least one school a year that we will be building," said Mike Smith, director of planning growth and school capacity.He said, however, that growth was slower this year, but that class reduction efforts need to continue to stay up to date with the growth."We're getting a little bit of a breather," he said.While East Lee County High School, the east zone's comprehensive high school, moved to its new location at 715 Thomas-Sherwin Ave., Treeline Elementary moved into the building that held East Lee County High School for two years.Treeline Elementary's permanent school building is being constructed on Treeline Avenue, but the school has opened in a building on Homestead Road which will eventually become a permanent elementary school building.Manatee Elementary, on Tice Street in east Fort Myers, opened in a new building and reported 733 students enrolled for the first cycle this year.Oak Hammock Middle School, scheduled to open in August 2008, will be the first choice for Riverdale Middle School students.
